About Us

Kristie Fagan

Owner/Director of Operations

With almost 20 years of experience, I started my career working in the daycare setting when I was 22. My first teaching position was as a preschool teacher for approximately 5 years and then opened my first In-Home Daycare in Howell.

Our business was growing so fast that we decided to build a home in Hartland, to accommodate the need for our current and future families looking for quality child care. Once again, we outgrew that space and that was when The Little Red Schoolhouse was established as we moved the daycare outside of our home to pursue my lifelong dream of owning a daycare center.

I also worked for Great Start to Quality as a Quality Improvement Specialist assisting childcare providers with their In home daycare operations and helping them achieve a 5 star rated daycare program.

My education background includes Early Childhood Development and Learning at CMU, and I continue to take classes yearly to stay current on the standards that are set by MDE and NAEYC.

Howell is home for my family.   I love to both bake and cook for my family and host holidays at our home. In the warmer months here in Michigan we love to camp, and in the winter months, we love to travel to warm places.

I look forward to working with your family and can’t wait to speak with you.

Kate Tomaszycki

Assistant Director

Hello! My name is Kate, and I am a passionate, student-focused teaching professional committed to providing a nurturing, safe, and balanced learning environment for every child in our care.

With 17 years of teaching experience—including 13 years in formal school settings overseas and 4 years in childcare here in Michigan—I bring a diverse and global perspective to early childhood education. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, along with continuing education units in Infant and Toddler development. My love for early childhood drives me to continually pursue training and professional development in child growth and learning.

Encouraged by mentors who recognized my leadership potential, I have recently undertaken administration training focused on childcare regulations and team leadership. This has equipped me to better support and guide fellow educators while upholding the Little Red Schoolhouse philosophy of excellence in care and education.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy art, photography, and traveling—having visited 15 countries and speaking three languages. Most of all, I cherish spending quality time with my family and winding down with a good TV series.

I’m proud to be part of the LRS community and look forward to making a positive difference each day!

Mary Rutka

Site Coordinator

Hi, I’m Mary! I graduated from Adrian College in 2016 with a degree in Elementary Education and have been joyfully teaching Preschool full time for over 8 years. Early Childhood education is truly my passion, and I am always seeking new ways to grow professionally and support the little learners in my care.

I believe young children learn best through hands-on exploration and play. My classroom is warm, welcoming space where curiosity is encouraged, kindness is practiced daily, and each child is celebrated for who they are. I also value strong parent-teacher communication and enjoy keeping families involved with regular updates, shared milestones, and those small but special everyday moments.

Outside the classroom, I’m married to my wonderful husband, Kevin, and in 2024 we welcomed our greatest adventure yet-our son, Jack. When I am not teaching, you’ll likely find me baking, enjoying the outdoors, or spending time with my family. One of my favorite parts of the school day is story time- I am always on the lookout for new books to share and spark imagination in the classroom! I am so excited to partner with you and your child during this special stage of their learning journey.
